What's Included

What's included in wheel service

A good wheel is the single best-feeling upgrade for an ebike. Even tension, accurate dish, and quality spokes make the bike feel lively and stay true. We do it right.

  • Wheel truing: lateral, radial, and dish correction
  • Spoke replacement with matched spoke length and tension
  • Hub service: bearing replacement, pawl lubrication, freehub service
  • Full custom wheel build: rim, hub, and spokes of your choice, hand-tensioned
  • Tubeless rim tape install and valve setup on new builds
  • Wheel strength evaluation with tensiometer readout
  • Ebike-rated hub and spoke recommendations for heavier builds

Why hand building matters for ebikes

Machine-built wheels are fine on light bikes. On a 60-pound ebike with motor torque pulsing through the rear spokes on every pedal stroke, uneven tension shows up fast as broken spokes, wobbles, and worn hubs.

A hand-built wheel with a tensiometer-verified, evenly tensioned spoke pattern handles the load, stays true longer, and is much cheaper than replacing wheels every two seasons.

Common Questions

Wheel Building questions, answered.

How long does a wheel build take?

A hand-built wheel from scratch takes about two hours of bench time plus a day to settle and re-tension. Total turnaround is usually two to three business days if all the parts are in stock.

What spokes do you use for ebikes?

For most ebike builds we recommend heavy-gauge straight-pull or J-bend spokes from Sapim or DT Swiss (Strong, Force, Competition Race, or similar). For high-torque mid-drive builds, we go heavier. We discuss the options before the build.

My wheel has a broken spoke. Can you fix just that?

Yes, if the wheel is otherwise sound. We replace the broken spoke, re-tension the neighbors, and true the wheel. If the rim is cracked or the hub is worn, we'll tell you whether replacement is the better call.

Can you service my hub?

Yes. We service sealed-bearing hubs (Shimano, DT Swiss, Hope, Industry Nine, and most major brands), replace bearings, service freehub bodies, and overhaul cup-and-cone hubs. We'll tell you whether a hub is worth saving or needs replacement.

Are ebike wheels really that different?

The rim and spoke loads are higher and the cycle count from heavier riders and more mileage is higher. Ebike-rated hubs with more/stiffer bearings, heavier spokes, and stronger rims last much longer than regular bike equivalents. We build with those parts when it's an ebike.
